Physiotherapy
Whatever it is, we will work with you to resolve it….
Assessment and Diagnosis
Assessment and Diagnosis forms an integral part of our approach to treating the whole body, not just a complaint in isolation. When you attend the clinic for your first appointment you will receive a detailed assessment and examination tailored to your needs. Muscles, joints, nerves, biomechanics and ligaments will be checked as necessary. Following this, your Physiotherapist will provide you with a diagnosis and explain to you what structures are affected.
A treatment plan will be devised to maximise your recovery – not only in the short term but also to prevent recurrence of the problem in the future. This typically includes a combination of treatment modalities listed below.
We pride ourselves in being a clinic that promote patient education. Your understanding of your condition is the most important part of your recovery journey and helps you to make lifestyle changes that will further compliment your treatment journey with us.
Manual Therapy
This is a carefully graded system of moving joints to reduce pain and restore normal mobility. The International Federation of Orthopaedic Manipulative Physical Therapists (IFOMPT) defines manual therapy techniques as: “Skilled hand movements intended to produce any or all of the following effects: improve tissue extensibility; increase range of motion of the joint complex; mobilise or manipulate soft tissues and joints; induce relaxation; change muscle function; modulate pain; and reduce soft tissue swelling, inflammation or movement restriction.”
At BA Physiotherapy we still believe in the importance of using our hands to treat our patients. Our physiotherapists are skilled in the use of joint mobilisations for all spinal as well as peripheral joints such as the knee, ankle, shoulders, elbows and feet. We also utilise soft tissue techniques that aim to treat muscles, tendons and ligaments. Whether it’s a knot in the muscle or a ligament with excessive scar tissue, your physiotherapist will ensure the correct manual therapy technique is utilised.
If you have pain due to neurological structures, such as a ‘trapped nerve’ we utilise neural mobilisation and manipulation techniques that aim to reduce tension within nerve and this can help to reduce numbness, pins and needles as well as nerve- related pain.
Electrotherapy
Electrotherapy is the use of electrical energy as a medical treatment. This can include ultrasound, laser and TENs machines. The above devices pass currents to the underlying tissue below the skin with the aim of reducing pain and swelling. These waves help to promote and accelerate healing.
At BA Physiotherapy Clinic, electrotherapy is used to complement the hands-on treatment and is not used in isolation as a modality. Our clinicians are skilled in being able to calculate treatment parameters that are required to achieve the desired treatment effects.
We use state of the art medical grade equipment alongside the latest evidence-based findings to ensure we give our patients the best outcomes. Whether you are suffering with an acute ligament sprain or a chronic tendon injury, you can rest assured that the correct parameters will be used to aid your recovery.
Acupuncture
All our physiotherapists are trained in the use of acupuncture. Acupuncture is an effective form of treatment that combines the principles of acupuncture and physiotherapy to promote healing and alleviate pain.
This specialised approach involves the strategic insertion of fine needles into specific points on the body to stimulate the brain to produce natural pain-relieving chemicals called endorphins. These endorphins have been shown to be stronger than pain killers and can aid sleep and reduce pain without the need for medication. The use of acupuncture in physiotherapy can also aid in reducing inflammation, increasing blood flow, and loosening tight muscles, ultimately enhancing the overall effectiveness of physiotherapy treatment.
With its evidence-based approach and wide range of benefits, acupuncture in physiotherapy emerges as a valuable therapeutic option for various conditions such as knee pain, back pain, sciatica, tension headaches and tennis elbow to name a few.
Our method of Acupuncture is the western method. We use Acupuncture as a modality along side other treatments for Physiotherapy only. We also undertake Electro-Acupuncture in our Southam clinic.
Exercise prescription & Rehabilitation
Alongside our hands-on treatment techniques listed above, we understand the importance of ensuring we get our patient to their maximum functional levels and prevent reliance on hands-on physiotherapy. This can only be achieve through exercise prescription and rehabilitation.
Exercise rehabilitation focuses specifically on the use of exercise to help patients recover. Tailor-made exercises and rehabilitation programmes are prescribed to each patient using our state of the art exercise prescription software. This allows you to access your programme via email, as an app on your phone or over a browser.
Home exercises are designed to maintain the benefits of physiotherapy and to improve posture, flexibility and core stability and to prevent recurrence of the condition. We expect that once a balance in strength, flexibility and mobility is achieved, our patients will be able to self-manage their conditions. Your program will not only focus on addressing your injury, but also look at you holistically in terms of the causative factors that may be putting you at risk of further injury and address these as well. Our target is to empower our patients to take an active role in their recovery process, ensuring a holistic and sustainable approach to their overall well-being.
Taping
Taping plays a vital role in the rehabilitation and recovery of patients. All our clinicians in clinic are able to utilise tape as an adjunct to your hands- on treatment. In clinic we have use both Kinesio tape and zinc Oxide tape to help patients achieve their optimal goals.
With its unique properties and flexibility, Kinesio tape provides support to injured joints and muscles, while allowing full range of motion. It is designed mimic the skin’s elasticity, promoting natural movement and relieving pain. Its adhesive nature ensures a durable yet gentle hold, making it suitable for a variety of conditions, from sports injuries to everyday muscle strains. In the hands of a skilled physiotherapist, Kinesio tape can be a valuable tool in enhancing healing and restoring optimal function.
Zinc oxide tape is known for its strong adhesive properties and ability to offer long-lasting support. We opt for zinc oxide tape due to its secure holding ability, which helps to reduce excessive joint movement and minimize the risk of further injury. This type of tape is particularly effective in treating sprains, strains, and is also used for postural support around the shoulders and back.
When treating very acute conditions, tape plays a huge role in offloading painful structures or reducing swelling through lymphatic drainage.
